After expanding Yamaha Corporation into the world's biggest piano maker, then Yamaha CEO Genichi Kawakami took Yamaha into the field of motorized vehicles on July 1, 1955. The company's intensive research into metal alloys for use in acoustic pianos had given Yamaha wide knowledge of the making of lightweight, yet sturdy and reliable metal constructions. This knowledge was easily applied to the making of metal frames and motor parts for motorcycles. Yamaha Motor is the world's second largest producer of motorcycles (after Honda)[citation needed]. It also produces many other motorized vehicles such as all-terrain vehicles, boats, snowmobiles, outboard motors, and personal watercraft.

The Yamaha corporate logo is comprised of three tuning forks placed on top of each other in a triangular pattern.

Yamaha motorcycles industries dates back to 1887. However, it was not until the late 50's that they made their first motorcycle. It was exactly 19955 first of July when the Yamaha Motor Corporation was formed as a part of the Yamaha group. Today they are the second largest distributor of motorcycles which is quite an achievement for a business that arrived late on the market of motorcycles.

At first they could not be compared to Honda and Suzuki as their first model only sold 16000 times. However they made a fast increase with sales when the first sports model arrived. In the early 60's they were able to boost their sales by 600%. It was also the time when they could set ground selling motorcycles in the US. In 1970 they had already a catalog of 20 models and production reached almost 600 000 units a year.

Probably the most successful project was the Yamaha Virago. It was the first true cruiser that came out of Japan and until today still is a very popular motorcycle. Although they have a short history when it comes to motorcycles, they have build up reputation and admiration and still do.
